After a successful 'First' press we have been bitten by the cider bug and are hooked. We are now focussed on making real Derbyshire craft ciders our business.
We have access to a small orchard at Overton in the south of the parish, which we have carefully restored after 40 years of neglect.
2013 apples have been hand-picked from all over the parish from residents to which we owe great gratitude as we have, despite a poor harvest, managed to produce ten times the amount from our initial 2012 press.
Given the broad mix of apples used this year we are expecting an eastern counties style cider, with a fruity nose and a rounded full-mouth feel.
In addition to the Dry 6.0% cider we will also be naturally blending to offer a medium cider for those with a sweeter side and maybe a Juicy Pyder!!!
We are committed to maintaining the careful and traditional process of cider-making followed during our
experimental first year and are passionate about creating natural artisan ciders in Ashover with that same ethos.
Given the Derbyshire weather we do hope Mr Sunshine is on board with our ideas!!!
Our cider is currently bubbling away very delicately for a slow-ferment and will be matured and drank from spring onwards primarily available straight from a barrel at the multi-award winning real ale and cider house The Old Poets' Corner in Ashover.
We will also be offering our ciders for sale in draught form in 20 litre and 5 litre bag in box containers which are tapped. We will be experimenting with bottling if there's any left!!!
Long-term prospects look good following a planting 'experiment' on Bath Lane in Ashover this winter.
100 tress were planted of well-known good cider varieties including Kingston Black, Katy, Black Dabinett, Somerset Redstreak and Yarlington Mill.
Keeping with the 'local is best' theme we will be able to grow naturally with our orchards as well as helping to maintain important cider varieties for the future.
We really enjoy making our cider and hope you will enjoy helping us to drink it!
